SUPPORTED PROJECTS

The Bazaruto expedition – Mozambique 1997

Chico Birrell

This team from the University of Edinburgh and the Universidade de Eduardo Mondlane aims to study the coral reefs of the Greater Bazaruto Marine National Park, Mozambique. The project will ascertain indigenous use of and relationships with the marine environments and investigate the impacts of tourism. In addition the team will survey and map the marine areas to compile an inventory of the coral and benthic fauna. This work will be complemented with more specific population studies on commercially exploited species. In the wider perspective this project hopes to combine international and local efforts for ecological conservation and contribute to sustainable environmental awareness and education for communities.
