SUPPORTED PROJECTS

The Cuban plant conservation initiative

Luis Roberto Gonzalez Torres

Cuba supports the greatest plant diversity of the Caribbean Biodiversity Hotspots. The Cuban Plant Conservation Initiative aims at the conservation and sustainable management of Cuban plants. To achieve this goal we will develop a national media campaign addressed to develop Cuban people’s pride and knowledge about their plants and commit them to their conservation using the media. We will also decentralized conservation works by empowering local community leaders and promoting their autonomy to develop local conservation actions by training them in ecological and conservation techniques, environmental education, and project management. A special training course focused on plant conservation will be taught to students to increase their impact as volunteers in conservation projects. This Initiative will facilitate networking and resource sharing between Cuban conservationists by setting up the Cuban Plant Conservation Alliance – a partnership that will last beyond this project and keep working toward its aim.
