Evaluating participatory fish catch landing monitoring in Soariake Marine Protected Area, southwest Madagascar

Félix Saidale

Community-based catch per unit effort (CPUE) monitoring in marine protected areas (MPA) is an important tool to monitor conservation impact and increase community engagement in marine resources management. Community monitoring is currently running in Soariake MPA in south-west Madagascar but is hampered by the lack of willingness of most fishermen to take part because the process is considered too time consuming. The objective of this internship is to test a new, less intrusive fish catch landing monitoring process and make recommendations as how to improve the monitoring system in Soariake MPA.
