Habitat conservation of globally threatened spot-billed pelicans in Sri Lanka

Kanchana Weerakoon Ranasinghe

Now we have identified main reasons for habitat degradation of Pelicans and other water birds who occupy the man made tanks in Sri Lanka. The man made tanks (previously home to many threatened birds) are under threat from pollution and invasive plants.

Communities also depend on these tanks for their daily water needs. Therefore it is very important to protect the tank habitats for both people and for the birds. The main objective of the proposed project is to protect some small tanks by creating awareness, applying some conservation actions such as eradication of invasive species, planting trees, training and directing community towards best practices to protect the habitats of threatened pelicans and other birds.
