SUPPORTED PROJECTS

Aberdeen University/Unimas Project Swallow Reef ’96

Giles Mackey

Working in conjunction with members of staff from the Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation (IBEC) and the University of Malaysia, Sarawak (UNIMAS), Project Swallow Reef will be the first in a series of surveys for the Coastal Zone Management which plans to survey the coasts and islands of Sarawak and Sabah between 1996 and 1998. The project will conduct a baseline study of the unexplored coral reefs surrounding Pulau Layang Layang/Swallow Reef in the Spratly Islands. The team will compile species lists, study faunal reef interactions, map reefs, and assess reef condition. The results will be submitted to the Sabah Parks Coral Reefs Committee with suggested measures for sustainable reef management. The bird populations of the island will also be undertaken, focusing on the Swallow Reef Sanctuary.
