Rainforest reserves for Critically Endangered Comorian fruit bats

Brent Sewall

Motivated by the plight of a critically endangered fruit bat, Livingstone’s flying fox, and that of a range of other threatened species sharing its rapidly disappearing species-rich rainforest habitat in the Union of the Comoros, the project team engaged in an in-depth conservation planning effort to lay the groundwork for establishing the first forest reserves in the country.  This project used a participatory approach to develop specific plans for reserves that will be beneficial to bat and forest conservation, sustainable, and have broad local and governmental support.
