A survey on the existent status and habitat requirements of white-eared night heron in South Guangxi

The species is so rare that we have little information about it, especially about its habitat preferences and requirements. In 1999, two breeding site have been found in Shangsi and neighbouring Fusui counties respectively (Zhou 2000). It is the only confirmed breeding area of the species up-to-date in the world. Immediate conservation action for the species is critical, but current efforts are restricted by the limited expertise available. In the project, the population of White-eared Night Heron in South Guangxi will be censused, and its habitat preferences and requirements will be studied. We shall submit the results of study and suggestion to the local government to enable the design of suitable conservation plans.
