SUPPORTED PROJECTS

Sumba forest conservation project

Martin Jones

Following Manchester Metropolitan University's successful conservation research projects in 1989 and 1992 - which assessed population sizes, status and habitat associations of the restricted-range bird species of the Indonesian island of Sumba - the 1993 "Infrastructural Development and Community Extension Programme" aimed to provide support for the provincial department of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation (PHPS). This was achieved through: (i) upgrading and constructing new regional offices in west Sumba; (ii) holding workshops to involve local communities in the drafting of forest conservation action plans. Monies were distributed through the BirdLife International Indonesia Programme.
