SUPPORTED PROJECTS

Zapata swamp project, Cuba 1994

Juan Criado Hernandez

This project is mainly focused on Zapata Rail (Cyanolimnas cerverai) and Zapata Wren (Ferminia cerverai), both globally threatened species within their known and possible range. They are range restricted bird species and only occur in very few sites in Zapata Swamp. The aims of the project are: to improve current records on conservation status of the species; to identify threats on the species; to test field methodology for further research on conservation biology of both bird species; if possible recommend conservation measures to be taken for preventing any decrease in their populations; and to look for collaboration between local people and institutions in order to achieve a better sustainable development of the area.
