2019 CLP Awards Announced!
Executive Manager's Message

It is with great pleasure that we can announce the winners of CLP’s 2019 Team Awards!

The three award-winning projects will initiate research and conservation activities on smooth hammerhead sharks off the coast of northern Peru, great hammerhead sharks in the Caribbean waters off the coast of Honduras and greenheart trees, one of the most valuable timber species in Guyana.

We are now getting ready for the 2019 Conservation Management and Leadership Workshop which will be held in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest. Coincidentally, the training location is in close proximity to the site of a 2017 CLP-funded project where a team has been using camera traps to reveal the secrets of this fragile and threatened biodiversity hotspot.

Also in the coming months, CLP will be involved in the International Congress for Conservation Biology (July, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) and the Capacity Building for Conservation Global Conference (July, London, UK). Registration is open for both events so register your interest with the organisers ASAP and then let us know if you are attending.

Do keep up to date with all the latest CLP news and funding opportunities via our Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Where Are They Now?

In 2011, Jean Paul Ntungane joined the Conservation Leadership Programme alumni network via his CLP internship with BirdLife International in Rwanda. Today he is project manager for the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) Regional Implementation Team in the Eastern Afromontane Biodiversity Hotspot. Read how big picture thinking, a dedication to learning, and a profound commitment to conservation have fuelled his career so far.

John, B.A., Nelson, B.R, Sheik, H.I., Cheung, S.G., Wardiatno, Y., Dash, B.P., Tsuchiya, K., Iwasaki, Y., Pati, S. (2018). A review on fisheries and conservation Status of Asian Horseshoe Crabs. Biodiversity and Conservation, 27(14): 3573–3598. LINK

Horseshoe crabs are the only extant xiphosurans and are believed to be morphologically unchanged for more than 200 million years. Of the four extant species namely, Limulus polyphemus, Tachypleus tridentatus, Tapinauchenius gigas and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda, the latter three are found in Asian waters. Recent evidences showed that Asian horseshoe crabs are facing serious threats such as degradation of their spawning grounds and habitat, environmental pollution, overexploitation as a culinary delicacy and biomedical bleeding practices.

The Chaco has high richness of medium- and large-sized mammal species and is one of the most endangered ecoregions in the world. Our goal was to assess associations between livestock and medium and large mammals in Bañados del Quirquincho of the Chaco of Northwestern Argentina. In five habitat types, we set 15 to 20 camera traps during at least 30 consecutive days to determine native mammal species and livestock camera trapping rate.
