Conservation Action Planning: Application on the ground, Sakhalin Island, Russia

Vladimir Ivanovich Ovchinnikov

We propose to work with local stakeholders to refine and implement the Conservation Action Plan (CAP) developed in 2008 for the Langry basin in Northwest Sakhalin. The CAP focuses on Sakhalin and Siberian taimen, the world’s largest and most endangered salmonids. In 2009, we will implement an in-basin anti-poaching strategy and monitor its success. We will also launch a water quality monitoring programme which will provide baseline data applicable for assessment of and response to oil and phenol spills. Data will be compiled in a protected area nomination document, which we will submit to the Russian government to ensure long-term conservation of the region.
