Extinction Risk and Conservation of Horseshoe Crabs in Coastal Bangladesh

Horseshoe crabs in Bangladesh’s north-eastern coastal islands are globally threatened, but data on their population size, distribution, and habitats are limited. This project aims to assess extinction risk, population dynamics, and conservation options for these species. We will conduct night-time beach surveys, mark–recapture, and size-frequency analysis to estimate population structure and distribution. Key spawning and feeding habitats will be identified and mapped, with habitat quality scored to prioritize conservation areas. Local communities will be engaged through interviews and participatory mapping to identify threats and co-develop management options. Expected outputs include population estimates, generalized habitat maps, ranked conservation priority sites, community awareness workshops, and a practical, locally-informed management plan. These results will directly inform local conservation strategies, guide sustainable use, and support policy recommendations, ensuring long-term protection of horseshoe crabs in Bangladesh.
