Chameleons for conservation: surveys and monitoring in Menabe Region Madagascar

We will make a quantitative assessment of chameleon populations across a gradient of habitat degradation in Menabe’s dry forests. We will survey roosting chameleons at night from randomly located transects and will use distance sampling to estimate population density. We will also develop and test a simple, repeatable monitoring protocol for use by the future management team in the new protected area. We will identify key sites for chameleon conservation and determine which species are most likely to be impacted by habitat change.
