Community-based wildlife monitoring in West Kalimantan, Indonesia
The "Heart of Borneo" Initiative aims to conserve the largest continuous rainforest in Southeast Asia through creating a network of wildlife corridors, protected and sustainable-use areas. Participation of local communities is crucial for the long-term success. This proposed project aims to involve village communities situated in a corridor connecting two national parks in West Kalimantan in monitoring selected wildlife. Relevant species were chosen in a participatory process, considering cultural and economic importance and will be monitored using techniques appropriate for local stakeholders. This process will ensure that aside from conservation-relevant data also local awareness regarding importance of wildlife conservation will be generated.
