Improving community-based conservation of Lake Kuyucuk Ramsar Site, Turkey

Emrah Coban

In just four years at Lake Kuyucuk, the team has achieved quick results. The lake has been designated as a Ramsar site, a European Destinations of Excellence, and a Sustainable Ecotourism Destination by the Turkish Ministry of Tourism & Culture. Previous projects have also raised enthusiasm and financial support for conservation activities from local communities and local government. The time is now right to establish an environmentally-friendly conservation and development model for Lake Kuyucuk integrating conservation and development. In light of a new threat to the lake through a proposed dame across the Kars River, this project aims to establish a demonstrative sustainable development model for a protected site and avoid possible threats through scientific work, lobbying, advocacy, environmental education and awareness-raising.
