Programme for the Conservation of Cuban Cacti

Luis Roberto Gonzalez Torres

This Programme will solve most of the problems for Cuban cactus conservation identified during the previous BPCP funded project - Conservation of Melocactus actinacanthus. The Programme for the Conservation of Cuban Cacti is aimed to enable the conservation and management of Cuban cacti and their habitats. Its establishment is a priority considering the increase of cactus habitat degradation by human activities in the last years. The Programme tasks regarding building capacity, public education and stakeholder advice will support the conservation of all Cuban cacti, having huge regional relevance due to Cuba supports the highest cactus diversity of the Caribbean hotspot (51 species, 33 of them are Cuban endemisms). At the present, the Programme researches will only focus on the population demography of the three most endangered Cuban cacti.
