Monitoring and conservation of vulnerable lappet-faced vulture, Elba Mountain Protected Area, Egypt

Ibrahim Naser Hassan Gad

The lappet-faced vulture (Torgos tracheliotus), is a Vulnerable species. In Egypt, the only remaining places where this species can be found is in the Gable Elba Protectorate. The population faces a number of threats (poisoning, persecution, habitats destruction, hunting, reduced foods, feral dogs) and, altough there is a lack of information about its conservation status in Egypt, it is clearly evidenet that populations have experienced a rapid decline during the last 10 years. This project will conduct a series of species surveys and monitor birds and their nests, and will conduct a participatory rural appraisal to gauge ways to successfully involve local communties in vulture conservation.
