Project Seabirds Argentina: Conservation through Community Involvement
Leandro Luis Tamini
Through initial research on the incidental capture of sea birds, we identified two opportunities on which we could build a longer term project to conserve threatened sea birds in Argentina. Based on the high enthusiasm and support from local communities, we aim to create a strong and coordinated network of volunteers who can gather data on the status and trends of sea birds. Likewise, due to the intensity of the fisheries, we aim to enhance efforts for surveys and develop mitigation measures for incidental captures. Volunteers will receive training on data collection for long-term monitoring of beached sea birds, and the team will improve the on-board observers programme and bring together these two sources of data. An awareness raising campaign will be conducted through the development of a professional video and other visual material.
