Integrative conservation of the Terras Salgadas, Cape Verde

Alex Tavares

Terras Salgadas is the largest protected area on the island of Maio and the pressure put on this tranquil reserve has accelerated recently. We aim to raise awareness of locals and visitors on the importance and threats to Terra Salgadas. In this first stage we will be predominantly focus on physical protection system which will include installation of fences, gates and sign posts for visitor information. We will set up the first community-based protective measures for the Terras Salgadas and explore sustainable income opportunities for local communities to reduce pressure on coastal habitats and threatened species. Expected results will be: 1) Improved team capacity and raised awareness of locals and visitors on the importance and threats to Terra Salgadas; 2) the first effective protection of the area and its endangered species from misuse and poaching; and 3) opportunities for alternative sustainable income sources in the area through the eco-tourism initiative.
