An endless energy for conservation: Dolly Priatna

Dolly Priatna, January 2023

Dolly Priatna is a man of many talents. Whilst his more than 30 year career has seen him work in both academia, NGOs and private sector, his vision has stayed the same: to protect Indonesia’s rich biodiversity and inspire younger generations to choose a career in conservation. Dolly won a CLP award in 2009 for Ph.D. tiger research in Aceh, Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, helping to kickstart his fascinating environmental journey.

Dolly is currently a lecturer at the Pakuan University and an Executive Director at the Belantara Foundation.

In his early career as a conservationist, in 1991 Dolly (far left) conducted expedition in the jungle of Gunung Leuser National park in Aceh Northern Sumatra accompanied by colleagues and local people

Starting out in conservation

Dolly’s passion for his career was sparked by his love of nature from an early age; forests, hiking, camping, and living close to mountains.

From there, after studying biology he was inspired by the senior conservationists in the University (many of whom he is still in touch with today) to pursue this field.

“My career in conservation started when I went to Kalimantan (Borneo) for six months then another six months in the jungle of Aceh to observe the behaviour of wild orangutans. I then started my career as a research assistant at the Ecological Project of Wildlife Conservation International, which is currently WCS”.

General lecture at Sakado Senior High School, Tsukuba University about biodiversity conservation in Indonesia, in December 2022.

In Indonesia, he speaks about how rare it was at the time to choose a career in conservation as there were so few opportunities in the sector. Since then he spent more than 10 years working in technical positions at the Integrated Conservation and Development Programme (ICDP), a programme funded by the European Union which focused on the management of the Leuser Ecosystem in northern Sumatra. During this time, alongside colleagues, he established Kanopi Foundation, a local conservation foundation in North Sumatra. He then spent nine years working for the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) Indonesia Programme as a Country Manager, and was actively involved in establishing the Sumatran Tiger Conservation Forum of “HarimauKita” in 2008, and then chairing this forum in the period of 2012-2014.

During his many different fieldwork expeditions, he recollects exciting experiences of having to jump to disembark from a helicopter onto a big rock in the middle of the river to get to the survey site. Another time he was walking on a hillside in a jungle alone, after conducting fieldwork, and ran into a single wild elephant at a bend of the trail.

The elephant and Dolly were both very surprised to see each other, and Dolly screamed as loud as he could.  Both elephant and Dolly ran in different directions as quickly as possible!

In 2009 Dolly received the CLP award:

“I was really proud to receive the CLP award, as it was so prestigious and very competitive funding, not many Indonesians could get it at that time".

Preparing a proposal in English wasn't an easy thing for me, but with support and encouragement from colleagues, I prepared a proposal for CLP  –, I submitted and I was awarded! My project was to study tiger translocation in Sumatra to help mitigate human-wildlife conflict”.

Transferring from NGO into the private sector

Discussion with a colleague while working with private sector

In 2013 Dolly made the move to work with Asia Pulp & Paper Group’s sustainability division as Department Head of Forest Landscape Conservation. He speaks of working with the private sector: “Conservationists need to work with companies that want to make change. It is important when working with the private sector not to just give advice without solutions. You need to also give solutions that they can implement. Moving into a role in the private sector can come with its challenges as well as its rewards. You need to have a mindset of the conservation-business man. There are different languages in conservation and business, and to make change: you need to be able to speak them both. It’s thinking long term about both profit and biodiversity as well as influencing others. It’s thinking not just about tomorrow but all the years to come.

"Sometimes people think that we have to choose, it’s conservation or business, but you can do both. I had to build trust and relationships with colleagues across two very different fields of corporates and NGOs. You feel you need to prove that what you are doing is not simply ‘greenwashing’”.

Leading Belantara Foundation

Dolly has been involved in the Belantara Foundation, an Indonesian-based global non-profit organization, from the beginning and is now the Executive Director. It is a very different NGO from others in Indonesia because it focuses on landscape conservation. The foundation recognises that conservation initiatives can not be done alone, but need to be implemented on a wider scale involving all stakeholders. “Belantara” means wilderness or pristine forest and the NGO looks to “find solutions that benefit all parties and all sectors including the local community, nature conservation, and business”. Simply put, “wildlife does not recognise borders of conservation areas, peatland cannot be managed partially, they need to be managed using holistic and integrated ways without neglecting local communities and government-approved business sectors in the area. Part of the work is taking different stakeholders' ideas and ensuring that they are taken in one focused direction”.

My plans for the future? I want to progress as an academic, and look to pursue a full-time professorship within the next 3-5 years as well as stay involved with the Belantara Foundation.

Out of office with the team of Belantara Foundation, to start the year 2023.

Lastly, what is Dolly’s advice for conservationists just starting out in their career?

“We have to approach our careers with passion. Personally, I am a person who does not easily change jobs, I always consider each job carefully, so then everything will be easier and more fun. Another really important skill is how to convince and influence others in conservation – communication and presentation skills are key. There are a lot more opportunities now for young people to get into conservation. You don’t need to have a forestry or biology degree, if you graduated with a communication, economics, law, or even politics degree, you can still have a career in conservation, as it requires a multi-disciplinary approach.

"Remember that a lot of institutions now need conservationists. There are a lot more positions and times have changed. The private sector needs people like us too not just NGOs”.

And thinking about working in conservation into the future? “As conservationists we have to be visionaries and agents of change, we need to understand about conservation issues at the local, regional and global level. We also need to utilize our network as well as encourage other people to keep networking and inspiring the next generation to continue our efforts to save biodiversity. Every single living thing is part of an ecosystem, has its own role, and we as humans have a responsibility to keep it balanced. Our earth needs pragmatic conservation that can find a balance and accommodate social and economic development.

"It is an endless job conservation, and I am proud to do it”.
