Strategies for community-based coral reef conservation in Sumbawa Island, Indonesia

Ida Ansharyani

Despite the fact that Sumbawa Island, Indonesia, lies within the Coral Triangle, coral reefs here are poorly studied and conservation initiatives are nonexistent. Meanwhile, the reefs are threatened by unsustainable fishing and climate change. This project aims to raise the knowledge and awareness of local youth fishermen about coral reefs conservation through indoor and outdoor activities. It will also assess their vulnerability and capacity regarding coral reefs degradation using various participatory tools. A list of conservation strategies based on the improved knowledge and awareness will be identified and disseminated.
