🔍What will we find in the third installment of our CLP "Project Spotlight" series?
🐆 The beautiful snow leopard, with a habitat range extending across 12 countries of Asia, is a big cat with a matching appetite. This means that it often comes into conflict with people, by preying on livestock and harming their livelihoods, which can sadly result in retaliatory killings. It is listed as Vulnerable on the #IUCNRedList.
💡A CLP project team in India is working to change this. Supported by CLP in 2011, 2015 and in 2020, and working with @ncf.india and the @snowleopardtrust, the team has set up a long-term monitoring programme (based on information they uncovered in their 2011 CLP project) and implemented interventions including a community outreach programme that is being expanded across 7,000 sq km of Himachal Pradesh state.
📢 One initiative has trained over 100 local women across multiple villages to produce and sell handicrafts. Another is a community-led livestock insurance programme. These initiatives help to compensate herders for livestock predation by carnivores. Now there are very few retaliatory killings and, instead, local people approach the project team for help.
